Cyber Bullying

Graphic & Story by: Kristie Stremel
Cyber Bullying

On October 15, 2006, 13 year old Megan Meier committed suicide after being cyber bullied. Josh Evans, a fictional Myspace creation made up by, Lori Drew, the mother of one of Megan’s friends. "Evans" claimed to be 16 years old and Megan thought he was attractive. Evans pretended to like Megan and continued an online friendship with Megan. Her family described her at the time as having her spirits lifted. Then suddenly, Evans began leaving Megan hurtful messages. The next day, after telling her mother about the number of hurtful messages, the two got into an argument over the vulgar language Megan used in response to the messages and she did not log off when her mother told her to. After the argument, Megan ran upstairs to her room. She was found twenty minutes later, hanging by the neck in a closet.

Cyber bullying is much like school yard bullying, only it is done through digital communication devices. Some kids are sending cruel, vicious, and sometimes threatening messages via email and text messaging. Others are creating web sites that have stories, cartoons, pictures, and jokes ridiculing others. The new trend even has bullies tricking other kids into revealing sensitive personal information, and forwarding that information to other kids. More than half of American teens, according to The National Crime Prevention Council, are exposed to cyber bullying. In addition, the Council suggests that as technology advances and new forms of electronic communication are introduced, the safety of kids in cyberworld becomes further compromised.

Principal, Jessica Bird at Kenneth Henderson Middle School in Garden City, KS., agrees, "This day in age, cyber bullying is definitely a new form of bullying, and with the access to new technology kids have now, it certainly makes us very aware".

Cyber bullying statistics show that the affect this abuse has on victims can be devastating. Cyber victimization has been shown to cause poor grades, emotional distress, poor self-esteem, repeated school absences, depression, and in some cases suicide. Some kids are reluctant to tell their parents or teachers for fear of retribution or losing their Internet privileges.

A student in Southwest Kansas, Erica Droste, says she has been a victim of cyber bullying, "mostly on myspace and email, and text messaging people will make fun of the fact I’m gay" . When asked how this affected her, she replied, "It made me not want to hang out with friends and I’ve become shy and worry about what people think of me". Droste concluded, "There has been times that what people say to me has made me want to just die".

These outcomes are similar to real-life bullying outcomes, except for that with cyber bullying there is often no escape. School ends at 3 p.m,. while the Internet is open for business year round. Stopbullyingnow.com is a website that offers tips for educators, parents, and kids to address the growing trend of cyber bullying.

The issue of cyberharassment has gained national attention following the suicide of Megan Meier in 2006 and an increase of harassment on college campuses. Currently, Senator. Scott Rupp, R-St. Louis, is sponsoring a bill that would limit harassing language over the Internet and impose harsher penalties on the harassment of a minor.

Friday meeting 3/7

Sorry about not coming to the meetings!!
I asked off for this friday, but I have to show a couple of apartments at 2:00 so I won't be able to make it once again.

Dental work Gone bad

Mondays procedure was a disaster. It got so bad that We quit 45 min. into the procedure. He's now turned me over to a professional Pariodentist to do a surgery on my roots to get the root canal done. The problem is is that i've had two procedures that have failed on my mouth. I'm sore as hell. More scared to go back. And now I'm either going to have to travel to Amarillo Tex. or Topeka Kan. to get the surgery done. Which means I'm going to have to travel either way and have a surgery.
Guys i need to take care of myself. I'll finish what i've agreed to do but i'm thinking i'm going to have to step down from my position or give the responsibility to someone else. I don't want to place everything on Jenny because She has ENOUGH already to handle. So someone needs to step up and help.
I'm getting indesign on my laptop on friday so i'll still be able to design pages from home if need be and email them in as a PDF to the staff. I'll send my stories in via email still and color correct my photos at home and email all four version (COLOR CORRECT, B/W, ORIGINAL, WEB) in.
I'm really sorry i hate this more than you know. I feel fine at the moment but as i've learned from my last procedure gone bad,  the pain grows worse into the week. Although i do have stronger medication i can only take it when i'm at home because it knocks me out.
Any help would be much appreciated. I don't know when my next procedure will be or where yet we're waiting on Dr. Stotch to get back to us he has to recommend me.
Any how just letting everyone know whats up.
Again i'm really sorry for all of this trouble.

Thanks
Liz P

Jeff Blascyk Exhibition Story

Mercy Gallery opened it’s doors to GCCC student Jeff Blascyk who’s art reflect a collaboration of eight different medias as well as imagination that pushes the envelope March 2.

“It’s very imaginative,” Fred Dodge a viewer at the gallery said.

Dodge also said that Blascyk’s “Scarlet” piece stood out among the rest. To him the mere posture of the woman’s figure and the way she was drawn her an attitude which made the piece stand out.

The art show opened at 1 p.m. Mar. 1st with a “pretty good turn out” in Blascyk’s opinion. With many different styles upon the walls of the Mercy Gallery walls one piece stood out to a GCCC student.

“From far away it stands out,” said Irvin Duran who bought the “Scarlet” piece. “It’s a beautiful photo, I really like Jeff’s work and style.”

Even though the majority of the people in attendance telling Blascyk how much they like his work some didn’t enjoy all of Blascyk’s pieces.

“Some of it I like, some of it is too gruesome for me,” said Katie Allenbough a GCCC student who works with the Mercer Gallery.

Among his mixed media pieces Blascyk displayed work that used charcoal, water color, ball point pin, Indian ink, Photoshop and other forms of media totaling up to eight different medias.

“I’m doing my best to introduce people to this style of art,” Blascyk said, “a style that features a kinetic and explosive array of images told in a sequential fashion.”

Blascyk’s determination of his comic book and freelance illustrations has earned him the Jeff Blascyk Exhibition on campus. Mercer Gallery is featuring Blascyk’s art till March 16.

Blascyk originally from Kansas City, Mo., who now lives in Garden City, Kan. is a self taught artist. He started to concentrate on his art after high school and began traveling to comic art shows at the age of 23. Blascyk got his first piece published at the age of 25.

After quitting his full-time job as a General Mills technician he also moved to Garden City, Kan., from Kansas City, Mo. in pursuit of a full time freelance artist’s career, and has since worked for various publishers, helping produce over two dozen printed pieces, ranging from comic book series to concept, computer game art, album cover illustrations, novel and catalog designs.

His work appears in bookstores and comic shops, as well as on CD covers, T-shirts, hats, stickers and posters. Blascyk’s creations may also be spotted in art galleries, coffee shops, and major comic conventions and across the Internet.

Blasyck’s own development as a professional artist and illustrator has been sequential too. His early efforts to get published proved harder than ever imagined.

“There seemed to be closed doors, harsh critiques of my work and no one willing to give me a shot,” Blascyk said of the days in his early 20’s.

But Blascyk  kept looking for someone to collaborate with, as well as the chance to publish a book. Eventually, Blascyk and a lumber yard co-worker produced a piece called “Warriors of Destiny,” and adapted it to comic book format.

As the pair progressed on the publication, Blascyk continued submitting portfolios to comic producers, and collected more than 30 rejection letters over the span of two years.

Undeterred, he and his partner published “Warriors” with personal funds, printing 2,000 copies for sale at comic book conventions and to offer to media outlets and comic shops.

“Warriors of Destiny only sold a disappointing 900 copies in the first year on the shelf and was received harshly,” Blascyk said, noting that critics and readers appreciated the writing but “tore apart” the art.

After parting with the his collaborator, Blascyk opened Cybershaw Studios, a small art production operation, and over the course of three years the business produced a handful of works and comics that eventually found their way to publication.

“The biggest thing the studio did for my career was to put me on the map as a legitimate artist,” Blascyk explained, since it provided contact with a number of established artists. Some of them noted his determination to create successful comics, especially since he attended every show and workshop he could get to, educating himself on his chosen craft.

Then, in 2000, he and five others started an organization called the Kansas City Comic Creators Network as a support system for struggling artists seeking access to galleries, convention tables and opportunities for their work to be printed.

The KCCCN grew to over 40 members in less than a year, obtained a not-for-profit business license, hired a financial team and appointed a board of directors.

As one of the eight initial board members, he and his partners initiated membership fees, shortened the name to Comic Creator’s Network, and reached a high of 140 members among the ranks of professional and aspiring artists and illustrators. The CCN also expanded the franchise to two other cities.

The network published four books, plus two anthologies of over 300 pages, and organized Kansas City’s first completely sequential art exhibit. Called “Sequence,” the show ran for a month in the city’s West Bottom art district, finding space in six galleries and drawing extensive news coverage.

The artist’s association with the organization led to publication of four short stories in the anthologies, which sold out. One, “Moopsy and Me,” addressed the tragic death of his wife’s first son, drew critical acclaim, received a series of honors, and earned a nomination for the Eisner Award.

Simultaneously, Mr. Blascyk reached a 10-issue contract for a comic book series called “Silencer,” a violent revenge story, and though the publisher went out of business, the artist signed a deal with Hollywood Producer Robert Keyghobad, who helped put the HBO series “Carnival” on the air. “Silencer” and another series by the artist, “The Adventures of Texas Tenaka,” hit the shelves in 2004 – the year he relocated the Garden City.

Although Blascyk has stayed busy working, developing, and publishing his work he is now currently taking a break.

“I’m currently on hiatus from professional work to pursue my education before I deploy with my Army National Guard infantry unit to Iraq in 2009,” Blascyk said. “Until then, I’m writing, developing and refining my art skills to make another run at professional art in the future.”

Although Blascyk is now writing for the Breakaway magazine, drawing comic’s and art work for the Silhouette and developing other future stories for GC3 Buster Radio the blend and Breakaway and Silhouette he remains busy, and expanding on his talents.

Commentary Illustration (Jeff)

hey Jeff, would you be able to do a commentary illustration for the Silhouette over the weekend? I am writing a piece about strangers. GCCC has a very diverse culture, and yet no one realizes it. I was reading a piece in the Silhouette last year, and a college employee said one of the college's greatest strengths is everyone knows everyone. I hardly know anybody outside of baseball and the staff. So an illustration portraying the diversity here and the lack of contact between these different cultures would be amazing. Get back to me if it will be a problem.

I should have written on her earlier but didn't so i first apologize for that. Second I would like to apologize to everyone for missing the meeting on Friday. I had gone to see the dentist that morning and had to have electricity test done on five of my molars roots. My jaw had been really bothering me that week and by thursday began to swell on the right side. The lady doing the test slipped off my molar twice and hit my molar with her tool and the electricity and because i have damage to my roots she had it up at a high level of electricity to run the tests therefor when she hit the tooth i thought it was going to explode or something it hurt so bad.
With the end result from the doctor saying that i have to have 1 root canal for sure Feb. 26 with two more possible, and that that was why i had been in so much pain and why my jaw was swelling was because my body was trying to reject the teeth.
Well when i got home i was in a lot of pain from the tests. I laid down finally at about noon and took my pain medication and didn't wake up until four o'clock.
So again i apologize to everyone for missing the meeting and i hope that it went well and was productive. Just let me know what i missed and need to do.

Thanks Liz P

A night with Mike Huckabee

Not sure if this story is useable, but I wanted to do something for the Mag about Huckabee so we can get some of young Jacobs Photos he worked hard to take in the Breakaway.

A night with Mike Huckabee
By Jeff Blascyk

It’s not everyday that a legitimate celebrity lands in Garden City to make a public appearance. Come to think of it, it’s not any day! On February 8, 2008, this all changed. Garden City residents got to see potential President to be Mike Huckabee, give a speech at a hotel in downtown Garden City. This is a big deal for a lot of reasons. One reason is that there is no bigger celebrity on the plant than the President of the United States, and Huckabee has the chance to be just that. The second is that he took the time to come off the plane, away from the airport, and talk with real people of this community, in the heart of the community. It showed in the next day’s caucus results when he won in a landslide in Finney County and the entire state of Kansas.

Few people could debate the fact that Huckabee is a down to earth regular guy that has a gift for public speaking. You might, or might not like his politics but one thing is easy to see, he is an interesting, smart and funny guy who has strong beliefs about what direction to take this country. Governor Huckabee puts his politics out there for everyone to see, “I want a President that will put an out of business sign on the Door of the IRS.” Says Huckabee. Who knows if he could ever accomplish this but he puts it out there for all to see and hear. He would also like to see the United Stated totally independent from foreign oil, “Keep your oil, we don’t need your oil anymore than we need a bucket of your sand” says Huckabee in reference to our dependency on foreign oil. Huckabee is in favor of developing more sources of energy to get rid of the need for foreign oil. This would be huge for getting and keeping us out of the Middle East this would also help the development of Ethanol, Bio fuels, clean coal, wind and solar power and other renewable sources of energy.

Finney County is home to over 6,000 registered republicans and is an overwhelming majority in Garden City. This is not a large number on a national scale but Governor Huckabee still took the time to talk to just a small percentage of them at his rally. This kind of campaigning is something to watch for in the future as candidates learn how important it is to talk to the common folk that may be a bit off the beaten trail of the campaign circuit. People at the rally saw it as something exciting and looked to just get a glimpse of the man they have seen of TV for the past few months. It was a family event, Fathers brought there sons, and people came from hours away to hear Huckabee speak.

It’s important for people; especially the youth in Garden City and abroad to recognize the opportunity to hear someone like Governor Huckabee speak in person no matter what political ideology you happen to follow. He might be too far behind in this Presidential race but, you never know… anything could happen. He could wind up as a Vice Presidential candidate or he might be making his mark today, to make another run at the White House in the future.

We owe it to ourselves to get involved and get educated about the facts so we can make an informed decision at the polls this November. It’s up to everyone we are all in this together, no matter who gets elected, we all have to live with it. Everyone should get involved and let your voice be heard. If you say your voice does not matter, just remember February 8, 2008 when Governor Mike Huckabee; Presidential candidate, came to Garden City. Just think of what opportunities you might have had to tell a politician what you want from them, face to face.

I myself shook his hand and told him that my Guard unit; the 137th infantry, was redeploying to Iraq in 2009 “God bless you son, I hope I can become your Commander in Chief, and when I do I can bring you home safe, victoriously and honorably,” Said Huckabee, as he looked me in the eye. I’m not sure how he would do this but it was nice to hear a sincere acknowledgment on my statement. I wanted to put another face to the Iraq war, it’s not much but it’s something. Everyone needs to help our politicians put a face to the policies they implement. We can all do this by getting active in the political process and letting your voice be heard.

Media Meeting 2.15.08

Since I can never make it to the meetings, I have some things that I hope get discussed.

Mr. Jarmer- He is leaving soon and we could put a student twist on it, because his students are having to finsih the final essay (which is 10-15 pages long). Is that fair? Plus, this would probably be the first story we have done this year that has to do with students actually in the classroom.

I Did It

When giving a helping hand turns into an unparalleled experience.

Most collage students look forward to their winter break, come one, who wouldn’t? You get to sleep in, hang out with friends and family, play X-Box till your thumbs turn blue, and hopefully get some goodies from old St. Nick (Ok, it’s really your Mom and Dad).
For a group of GCCC student’s, this past winter break wasn’t just about them, it was about helping people in need.

It’s been almost three years since hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. For most people in America, life has moved on. For people down in the “Big Easy” it’s anything but normal, and life is still not easy. Kate Dibbern was one of the students that wanted to give something back to people that needed it the most. “I don’t think it will ever be back to normal, maybe in like 20 years. It’s still really bad down there.” Dibbern said, “People have forgotten about it and the government has stopped helping. Most of the work, like 90 percent of it, is being done is by volunteers.”

To many people visiting the hot spots of New Orleans the city looks beautiful and festive, but if you dare to venture just a few blocks away from the tourist attractions off Bourbon Street, you’ll see how devastated the city still is. “You still see homeless people everywhere,” Dibbern said. “We saw like 200 homeless people on one overpass.” Many of the people of New Orleans ran into contractors that took advantage of them and didn’t do the work correctly. Dibberns worked with other volunteers to help fix some of mistakes that the paid contractors made. “I mostly did a lot of drywall and puttying.” Dibberns said, “Another group got to gut a house, that’s the fun stuff. Breaking stuff and tearing the toilets out and tossing them, I was kind of bummed. They were telling me all these cool stories and I was like, well… I got to put mud on a wall” Dibberns said laughingly. “I guess someone had to do it.”

Those types of jobs are the thankless duties that the volunteers on this particular trip did everyday. This kind of labor might not be fun for most people, but it is essential to getting someone’s home back to a livable standard. The people that volunteer to rebuild and repair homes help get peoples life in order when they have nowhere else to turn. There are still some things that that can’t be replaced. There were many sentimental possessions lost in the disaster. “All of their family photos they had packed in this box were ruined,” said Dibberns. “This house was like right by the levy that broke; there were pieces of the old levy still there.”

So much of the city was destroyed and many lives with it. Most people think that the best parts of New Orleans are back up and running, and that true if you think the best things are Bourbon street and the French quarter. For Dibberns, the best parts of the city are still in great need. Dibbins thinks the best parts of New Orleans were some of the places off the beaten path. “I personally liked the places off Bourbon Street, where everyone was living.” Said Dibberns, “I would go running in the evening and I would just go in a different direction each night, and just go to some random place, it was cool” For people visiting this part of the country, the first thing they notice is the food is a bit different from what you get in an average western Kansas restaurant. Dibberns shared her experience of eating some of the local delicacies. “The people that owned the house we were working on took us out to eat, and I tried everything, I had so much food I never ate before, like crawfish, oysters, soft sell crab, and squid.” Said Dibberns. “I would dissect my food before I ate it and I was like, look it’s got little legs, I was intrigued by it.”

While working and taking in the culture of New Orleans, and meeting the people that were devastated by this disaster, had a profound effect on Dibbers, “Going down there I was humbled by the experience.” Dibberns said. “Felt so bad because I totally over packed for the trip. I brought tons of clothes and shoes; I was like oh gosh, I feel horrible.” This trip can help us realize that no matter what we have in our lives it can all be wiped out in the blink of an eye. Many of us that have a good life take things for granted. Sometimes we feel sorry for ourselves when life goes doesn’t quite go your way, but for Kate Dibberns she now has a new outlook on what really matters in life. No matter how bad your life gets, there is always someone out there that has it a little bit worse. “I felt bad because the week went by so fast.” Said Dibberns, “I would like to go back, there is still so much work to do and one week was just was not long enough, it’s still so sad to leave with so much more to do” The group Kate Dibberns went with was from the Trinity Lutheran Church. The Church plans trips down to New Orleans every year.

Huckabee

Check your emails, and news/Huckabee websites. How do you expect this campus, this community, this GC3 Media organization to seriously consider you a credible news organization, if you don't first consider yourselves as such? Yes, we all have other classes, jobs and commitments but do you realize that this COULD BE the story of the year for you? Those who have come to this realization, speak up!

STAFF STANCE 2.14.08

Super Tuesday has come and gone, but many are left with a muddled brain as to which candidate to chose. As motivated and excited as everyone feels about the upcoming presidential election, many are struggling with the choice at hand.

For many students at GCCC this could be their first opportunity to exercise their right to vote. In order to make an informed decision we need to look at the key issues and see where we stand. Often this can be an overwhelming task.

We hear many sides to each candidate but it seems we never truly know what each candidate stands for.

The other prevalent problem is the fact that we as students and the next generation of this country are expected to vote on someone of equal rank as us to lead this country, but we do not know who to decide, nor how.

Our elders become infuriated at our generations lack of enthusiasm for the political race but in all honesty is not politics just a race of who can tell a better lie? Honestly our president is only required to fulfill two jobs, appoint Supreme Court members, and protect our country. Now yes our President plays a role in influencing budgets, health care, and other such projects but in all honesty has no control over them. He/she can say yes I agree or now I disagree and give their input but has no control in making it happen.

So why bother in blabbering on and on about who has a better health care plan when they truly have now power in changing it? Good intentions line the path to hell. It’s results that matter and that make an impact.

Protecting this is where their full intentions aught to be upon. Are we or are we not at war with a country across seas. Should that not be the main focus of what our presidential candidates she be pressing upon. Because to be frank the issues that are most heard upon the news is attempting to get a woman in the white house or an African American in the white house. But is that where our concerns should lie.

To our age group and the men that are signing are registering or becoming apart of the military with the woman of our generation should it not be important to our future President that we are signing our names to a war that seems not to be priority one to them.

Blaming the youth for their lack of enthusiasm is not getting us anywhere nor you our elders. But if we are not made to feel cared about when it comes to our lives, why should we care about Hillary Oraka or any other Presidential candidate. What attempts have been made to make our generation aware and care about a candidate to choose? Selfish or self-centered you may think but the fact of the matter is the Presidential candidates and spinning a quilt of promises, ideas, and good intentions for you our elders just to get your vote. But we have seen no signs of follow through so who’s more naive you or us? Maybe is not just the fact that we’re apathetic maybe it’s just the fact that we aren’t about to vote for someone we don’t trust to lead this country, at least until further notice.

Burn Tower Article for Magazine

This is my rough draft for the burn tower article that i am doing for the magazine. If you would run through at and let me know what more you would like to see as a reader and any changes that need to be made. Thanks

A building on Garden City Community College campus is engulfed in flames and filled with smoke; firefighters flee to the crisis. No, the science and math building is not being torched, it is the recently built burn tower situated near the student center. The burn tower was a development made possible by a partnership between the college and the City of Garden City. It’s a building specifically designed to train firefighters and fire science students from all over southwest Kansas to practice real life emergency situations. Garden City Fire Fighter Stuart Wolzen says, “We will be going real slowly and they will do well” “Students will know what to expect when they go into a real situation” Lane County Fire Student Stryder Montgomery says “I’d rather know what I’m doing going into a fire then not.” The burn tower was new to most firefighters and students, Saturday January 26th marked the fist major burn tower demonstrations. Fire Science students and firefighters from Lane County and Garden City were the first to explore the benefits of the burn tower. Lane County Fire Supervisor Brad Applegarth says “This is the first official training for the students, they get a lot more experience here then they could anywhere else. It’s also nice to have a professional instructor on hand.” That professional instructor and organizer of the burn tower activities is GCCC Fire Science instructor Larry Pander. The burn tower will be used for a range of situations that are liable to occur in a real life affair. Before the students can dart in and begin rescuing victims, they must first practice putting on all the gear and making sure everything is functioning correctly. Firefighters are required to put on complete uniform and all equipment in less than one minute. The student’s practice inspecting air tank regulators and make sure everything will be functioning properly going into a smoked filled room. The air tanks can last anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes, it all depends on how hard the firefighter is breathing and how much work they are doing. Once the students are comfortable with the equipment the next step is seeing what they can do in a smoke filled room. The rooms in the building are not on fire for the first round, Larry Pander says “You have to break them in without fire first because to much can go wrong” The smoke is produced by a fog machine similar to those used for rock concerts. While in the smoke filled space the firefighters must practice searching and finding victims as well as keeping a look out for each other and finally finding a way to exit. While one group was in the building around the back, others practice the treacherous circumstance of getting through a wall or ceiling while in tangled in wires. Garden City Fire Fighter Ryan Powers says “It teaches students how to not panic and how to get through a wall or ceiling.” Once the future firefighters go through the first scenarios its then time to step up to legitimate fire. The inferno is created by lighting bales of hay with a small torch. When the bales are ignited a set of firefighters enter the structure. While inside the smoldering room instructor Larry Pander explains the different levels of a fire and how to accurately pursue an actual fire. The instructors want the students to go in without their breathing regulators on to get a sense of what it’s like without a functioning mask. “You feel the smoke and your eyes start burning” says Lane County Fire student Lucas Miller. Once the regulators are turned on the venomous smoke is sealed off. The burn tower is intended to withhold temperatures of 600 degrees but for first time practice it only reached around 250 degrees. Students practice saving victims trapped inside, one replica victim is an infant and the other a 160 pound imitation body. If a firefighter’s air supply runs out they must exit the building, exchange air tanks and return to the blazing structure.
The burn tower will become beneficial to nearly everyone is the southwest Kansas region. Current firefighters will continually make use of it, to be on top of their game. Firefighter students will get as close to a real life circumstances as possible. The burn tower will also assist the citizens of our community and the surrounding area’ because the firefighters will be prepared and qualified in the occurrence of a crisis in the area. GCCC Fire Science II Student Aaron Abrigo says “The more training the better gets them out of the classroom do it for yourself but for people who need your help in the future” A program like this is distinctive for Southwest Kansas. “Nothing in western Kansas like this” says Garden City Fire Fighter Stuart Wolzen.

Political Proposition: Think, Act, Vote!

Hi all, I wrote this and created the graphic last night. Let me know what you think...ks

Political Proposition: Think, Act, Vote!
by: Kristie Stremel

Super Tuesday has come and gone, but do you know where you stand in this political battlefield? As motivated and excited as everyone feels about the upcoming presidential election, many are struggling with the choice at hand. For many students at GCCC this could be your first opportunity to exercise your right to vote. In order to make an informed decision we need to look at the key issues and see where we stand. Often this can be an overwhelming task. We hear many sides to each candidate but it seems we never truly know what each candidate stands for. One way to get an idea of you political priorities is take an online quiz meant to identify how your views align with the candidates. Log onto www.wqad.com/Global/link.asp?L=259460 and participate in this quiz. Although not necessarily scientific, it provides insight not only to political beliefs but provides an opportunity to compare personal beliefs with each candidate. It allows one the capability to look at each hot topic issue and compare views with each candidate. In the end this survey, which only takes a few minutes to complete, will provide a ranking as to which candidate best fits.

This quiz, however, is only one way to make an informed decision. Continue to read information about each candidate—both past and present trends each represents. Subject yourself to dialogue with peers about the topics that directly and indirectly affect you. This is truly an historic election—one that provides a truly diverse plethora of candidates. And most importantly, exercise your right to vote.

Love Horoscopes for 2/14

Aries (March 21-April 19): For those currently in a relationship, the time is right for you to take your bond to a new level. Those looking to begin a new romance are likely to meet a potential partner soon. Friendships should strengthen during this period as well.

Taurus (April 20-May 20): Sometimes you want to lead and be in control, but this isn't the right time. You need to settle back and let someone else take the wheel for a while. Your laid back mood won't do any harm, so take it easy for now. Your boyfriend/girlfriend will do fine with taking over and you'll be receiving extra attention as well. If you're currently single, don't be shy this month. If you keep putting everything off, it might get to the point where it's too late.

Gemini (May 21-June 21): If you want to be seen you're going to have to get out in the world and make some noise. Friendliness and a willingness to help will leave a good impression on everybody. Making new friends should be very easy at this time. This month also looks good for those who are looking for a new romance.

Cancer (June 22-July 22): You are likely to be in quite the thoughtful mood recently, thinking through any relationship problems. Talk them through with a trusted friend for that much-needed fresh perspective!

Leo (July 23-August 22): One of the tricks of effective communication is to pick a time to speak when others will actually listen. And of course another is to express yourself in a way that can be understood by others. To keep things going in a positive direction make sure you remember the above when talking with your loved ones.

Virgo (August 23-September 22): Either you or your boyfriend/girlfriend may have had a few extra bumps in the road lately and could use a little attention. If you've had some problems, don't hesitate to reach out for comfort. If your mate has had a few challenges make an effort to help them restore their confidence.

Libra (September 23-October 22): Details are important at this time. Improve your relationship by focusing on specific things. Don't try to make big moves or dwell on "the big picture" right now. Instead, strengthen your bond by fine-tuning what you already have. This is also a good time for singles to except a date, even if you think that you two are exact opposites.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21): None of us always get what we want, but right now you're in the driver's seat; so ask and you shall receive. In fact, given the power of your charm at the moment you may get much more than you ever dreamed of.

Sagittarius (November 22- December 21): Positive energies surround you easing any complications in a relationship. This is a great day to surprise that certain someone in your life. Singles: Don’t count your pennies if you’re going on a hot date!

Capricorn (December 22-January 19): Unfortunately, this isn't your month for romance. A relationship that you're currently trying to pursue seems to be slowly falling apart, but on the other hand, something that seems to have no potential can take off!

Aquarius (January 21-February 18): Someone from your past may stir old feelings in you. These emotions may be so strong you find if difficult not to act on them. If you are currently unattached, this may be the time rekindle the relationship that stirred these feelings. If you're currently in a relationship be very careful not to do anything that could jeopardize your present situation.

Pisces (February 19-March 20): While you may want to be center stage right now, your relationship may be better off if you put your significant other before you. Single? Keep your eyes open. Someone around you is slowly falling for you.

radio story

Not sure how to write for the radio broadcast, but here is what i came up with. radio people feel free to tear me a new one.

Black in Garden City
The struggles of getting black
culture rooted in western Kansas.

Issue: 08.31.08

Section: News/Feature

Reporter: Jeff Blascyk

What is it like for the young black students to live in a community with such a small

black population?

(Whitnie Young sound bite, 9 seconds)

The Black Student Union welcomes new students and helps them get acclimated to life in

western Kansas When asked about the BSU, freshmen Anthony Chalmers had this to say,

(Sound bite 11sec “Anthony Chalmers”)

The question has come up recently if having a course, like African American studies at

the GCCC would be a good thing I recently sat down with Lesa Gilbert, Admissions

Representative and sponsor of BSU.

(Lesa Gilbert Sound bite about 8 seconds).

Who knows if this class will ever be offered at this school. This course would educate

people on black culture and history where they might not have exposure to otherwise. Most see this as a positive thing for this community. Black history

month is over at the end of February, but black history and black culture goes all year around.

Representing Black culture in Garden City

I see some things right off the bat, cap and punctuation errors i need to fix, but here is the first draft. Let me know what you guys think and if there are some huge errors in style or grammar that you see. I'm still gonna punch up some things but here is what i have thus far. Oh, and i need some good title ideas for this story

“Alone, all alone, nobody, but nobody can make it out here alone”. These powerful words were made famous by African American writer and poet Maya Angelou. These words offer a question, what is it like to live in a community that lacks people of your background or culture. What is it really like to be black in Garden City?

Garden City Community College is quite diverse and has many people of different cultures. You might find yourself talking with a student from a small town like Leoti, Kansas or chatting with students representing the east coast from places like Philadelphia or New Jersey. You might even find yourself meeting students that have come here from another country like Mexico or Brazil. Those differences in backgrounds and culture add to the excitement for many college students and helps the world seem a bit smaller. These differences also can cause quite a culture shock. I’ve heard students say they miss tall building of the big city; they miss the shopping malls of suburban America and some long to see beaches and trees of a less desolate landscape. For some students what they miss the most is see more people like them, “When I came out here, I was like, where are all the Black people at?” said one student. The college might be diverse but that’s not a refection of the western Kansas landscape we live in. The almost non existing black community in Garden City leave some students a bit home sick. According to the United States Census Bureau in 2000, there is a less than 2% Black population in Garden City. “Everyone around here is Friendly”, Said Freshmen, Damon Evens, a young African American student from Florida. “There are a lot of people out here that help us out.”

The campus has an organization that helps welcome black students. The Black Student Union, or BSU, has been a organization for five years and offers a support system to Black students, but is open to any student who wants to become a member. I asked Lesa Gilbert, Admissions Representative and sponsor for the BSU, how they get new

members. “At the beginning of the fall semester we host a picnic and an ice cream social.” This helps new African American student get to know more about the school and other black students. When the BSU meets they discuss what there mission is all about, future events, and to see if there is anything new freshmen members would like to discuss. Gilbert shared with me the many success stories of former BSU member in the recent years. Many members of BSU have gone on to get Bachelors and Masters degrees, “One young man graduated and started his own business and is doing quite well.” “The perception that African-American students that are here on sports scholarships, are just athletes… is just not true.”

When asked if having a course like African American studies would be a good thing for this community college Gilbert said, “That would be great, as an educational institution we should try to educate every student about every culture, that is what we are all about.” When I asked Kevin Brungardt, Dean of Academics, the same question he said, “There are many considerations that go into the curriculum decisions we make. For instance, is there need? If there is ever a need for African American studies, I'm sure we would look into offering it.” Is there a need for people of a western Kansas community college to learn about black culture? Many students expressed the need for more classes that bring more education about African-American culture.

“There are a lot of things that black people have done, and know one knows about it.” Said Wayne Daise-Burgess, sophomore who is also a BSU member. Damon Even added, “Black history month is a good thing but black culture does not stop on March 1st. Many

Students are interested in the idea of a course like this, but some are still a bit skeptical about how many people would really be interested. “I don't see a whole lot of white people wanting to take that class,” Said Whitnie Young, sophomore basketball player and member of BSU. It’s still not clear if this course would be well received at this school, but the question needs to be asked. For many young students this would be a great opportunity to learn about a culture they have little exposure to. One thing is for sure, there are people on campus that think it would be beneficial to their education. “The College is really good at listing to the community and what they want in the college”, said Patricia McIntyre, member of the African American Coalition of Garden City. This organization that has been around for about four years and also works with the BSU in getting new students acclimated to the Garden City Community.

Patricia McIntyre continued to express how important it is to help educate people about the differences and similarities between the two cultures. “We are part of this Community,” She adds. When asked if she thinks the Majority of people in Garden City have a positive view of black culture she replied, “No…not at all, but it’s not their fault, they have not been exposed to it. I still get people saying to me, I like you Pat, I just don't like the rest of them [black people].” She continued by saying, “Getting to talk to people is the only way to dispel these negative stereotypes.” Wouldn’t a class about African American culture play a role in starting dialog between white and black students? This would be a great place to dispel and talk about stereotypes and how much truth is behind each one. There are very few public forums, like a classroom setting where people can let there guard down and open themselves to some new idea. Just like how a Philosophy class is paramount to young students in learning about things that religion might not have the answer for. We have a large religious community and not very many people open minded to other beliefs held by Philosophers like Nietzsche, Kant and Buddha, but it’s still taught. Actually Philosophy ends up being one the classes people like the most because it opens their minds to different ideas, much like a class about African American history and black culture would.

Most of the students I talked to had a good overall view of Garden City and the people that inhabit our working class community. The fact of the matter is still apparent, the underpinning of racist views and bigotry are still present, even if it’s not smacking you in the face as you walk to your classes. “There is still some Racism around here, I know because I hear it from the students, and it’s surprising to me.” Said Gilbert. “I had students about three weeks ago approach me about starting a negative…you know, type group, I didn't know what to say back to him. I finally told him if he wanted that sort of organization to go talk to the SGA.”

When hearing about a group of students on campus actively looking to start this type of club, people were not surprised. “I know a lot of white people that were rasied to hate black people,” said one student that wished to remain anonymous. Most of the African-American students I talked to were not even against the idea of this type of group on campus. “Opinions never hurt anyone.” Said Wayne Daise-Burgess. “I don't care, as

long as they don't exclude who can join, maybe it’s good to get some of those things aired out so they can be discussed; they might learn that they have the wrong opinion.”

Even with this touchy subject matter making it around the campus rumor mills, most Black students stay positive and look at all the great things they get from fellow students and faculty. “I love it here,” said Young, The teachers and faculty are great. You can tell they really care about us.” It seems many faculty members have connected with the African-American students, “Barb Larson is really down to earth and does whatever she can to make me a better student and a person,” Said Anthony Chalmers, 19 year old freshmen. “I think what Miss Lesa does with the Black Student Union; especially this being a predominantly non black college, to make us as African Americans feel involved… is great.”

Overall the African-American community at the collage is positive about going to a school with people of many different beliefs and diverse backgrounds. It’s good to get this kind of exposure for everyone, Black, White, Hispanic, Asian or whatever culture you might be. It gives these students the possibility of dispelling some of the stereotype they have about other cultures in the process, Garden City can be a great place for many people to live. I finished by asking Whitney Young if she would ever conceder moving here to live after college, and she said, “Um…I might come back here after I'm old and I retired.” Until then she will play basketball, continue with the BSU and mentor new

African American students to the college. She plans to make her education her number one priority and test the college motto. “After here you can go anywhere.”

Burn Tower Demonstration this Saturday

The magazine wants to do a story on the burn tower here at the college. They will be burning the tower this Saturday, so the firemen can practice emergency rescue. I was wondering if anyone else was planning on stopping by to get some interviews and pictures. They are going to start at 9 am and go all day. Let me know if anyone else is interested in covering this story or wants to help take pictures.

Pornography

Okay! Brace yourself!! It's kind of long!!! But I thought i'd share with you all a ROUGH(!!!!) draft of the article I'm working on. The concluion is weak and needs some help. I'm just waiting for one of those brilliant ideas to pop into my head and it hasn't happened yet. It's also about 3 and 3/4 pages long, so let me know what i can cut out! Thanks!! Here it is:

It is because of porn’s need to dehumanize women that it should be a restricted free speech issue. Not only is pornography degrading to women, it is also harmful to marriages and increases sex crimes. When the thought of pornography comes to a person’s mind, one usually thinks of a Playboy magazine and very explicit sexual videos, but pornography goes way beyond those immediate stereotypes and preconceived ideas.

Set aside what you picture when you think of pornography. You may think that it isn’t harmful to relationships, but you would be shocked to find that it could be. The average female porn star retires at the age of 27 and the average male porn star retires at 32. The reason this is, is that the porn star industry sees the human body at being at its physical peak between the ages of 19-27 for females and 21-32 for males. Over time, it will become more and more difficult to be sexually aroused by your life-mate because he or she will age while the porn star remains young. Not only are you putting yourself at risk for the temptation of an affair, but you are also killing what should be a beautiful thing between you and your spouse. If your mate likes to use porn to accompany sex, they can get wrapped up in the movie, and be making love on a fantasy level during intercourse. Most women make love on an emotional level. It can upset then when his attention is distracted by the technical side of sex instead of the emotional side.
I certainly would never want to be compared to a porn star, because in reality which is really the better body? The one whose breasts nursed, or will nurse, your children? The body that held you close and was there for you through sickness and through health? The world might see the young porn stars’ body as being the best, but which is really the best? Why would you want to give up the ability to be aroused by the best? In the long run, if someone continues to watch and only get aroused by porn, they have a big risk at becoming addicted.

Being in a relationship with someone who is addicted to porn isn’t only stressful but it is also very hurtful. An addiction to porn is a serious issue because addicts turn into people that they never want to be. It’s hard for them to stop and control. They can even become violent with it, which brings me to the point that over the year’s pornography has increased sex crimes. It’s not the typical pornography that you see on HBO every once in awhile that is increasing sex crimes. It’s the hard core, sometimes violent, pornography that is. One thing that cannot be ignored is the fact that 90% of sexual offenders admit to have used pornography “frequently”. The images that are seen on pornography are found to be disturbing. It sickens me to think that there is hardcore porn out there that shows videos of women violently engaging in sex. If these videos are being bought, they must be being enjoyed by somebody. If a video like this excited them at one point, who is to say that they’re not going to try and live out their fantasy? Who says that a woman who was raped wasn’t just a subject that a man used to experience something that he once saw? Do people just come up with these things in their sick minds or are they learning it from somewhere? From the book, “Making Violence Sexy”, they interviewed a rapist and this is what he had to say:
I went to a porno bookstore, put a quarter in a slot, and saw this porn movie. It was just a guy coming up from behind a girl and attacking her and raping her. That’s when I started having rape fantasies. When I seen that movie, it was like somebody lit a fuse from my childhood on up. . . . I just went for it, went out and raped.

Reading things like that definitely shocks me but my biggest issue with pornography is that it is so degrading to women. Hardcore porn hardly ever shows pictures of the women’s face, it focuses more on their body parts. These women are not seen as women. They’re seen as things. Sure, Hugh Hefner may publish a few little facts about his latest centerfold (birthday, major, favorite flower, whatever), in an effort to humanize her. But I would imagine those statistics are pretty tough to read while holding the magazine sideways. It doesn’t work. And it can’t work. The men who read Playboy don’t necessarily care about getting to know her. After all, they’re not fantasizing about having an intellectual conversation with these women. They’re not fantasizing about these women themselves at all, except as an appealing body or object. John P. Araujo writes in the book, “Pornography: Opposing Viewpoints”, that: Art and science can portray a nude female without robbing her of her dignity and humanity, but pornographers must reduce women into tools of sexual satisfaction in order for women to suit their purposes.

Pornography is by far not the biggest problem we have in today’s world but it is also an issue that will always be out there. I know that people are going to continue to watch, read and enjoy it and that’s O.K. I just thought I’d open your eyes and let you know what pornography might be like from a women’s point of view.

Budget Follow Up

I was assigned this piece, but now with everything going on, it's becoming difficult to find time to pursue this story. Can anyone help out?
